We have received and distributed more than $127,000 to support the Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery work in New York City. At the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the national media gave a lot of attention to the fact that there is much work still to be done there. We’re grateful that EPC’s Resurrection Brooklyn Presbyterian Church is “on the ground” there and has been engaged from the beginning in the relief work. Indeed, Resurrection-Brooklyn has gained the reputation as being one of the few organizations in the city that can “get things done,” according to Brian Steadman. Brian (photo) is directing the recovery effort and serving the pastoral staff of the church. “The needs in Brooklyn, and all of NYC, are still great. There are hundreds of homes still in need of repair. Many families are living in unsafe conditions due to mold because their temporary shelter has run out,” he said. He added, “Predictions that it could take as many as three years if not longer for New Yorkers to ‘recover’ from Sandy are looking accurate as we approach the one year anniversary.”

Additionally, more than $127,000 was collected through your giving and distributed to help the victims of the tornado that hit Moore, OK this spring. Special thanks to Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita, KS and Kirk of the Hills in Tulsa, OK. These EPC churches regularly sent relief and recovery teams to Moore, OK and helped identify ministries located in the disaster area.
